       Молодые моряки Гэби, Чип и Оззи получают увольнительную на сутки и приезжают в Нью-Йорк. В метро Гэби, уроженец Мидоувилля, штат Индиана, видит афишу с фотографией «Июньская Мисс Турникет» и тут же влюбляется в изображенную на ней девушку.        Гэби просит друзей отправиться с ним на ее поиски. По дороге таксистка Брунгильда Эстерхази кладет глаз на Чипа и не отстает от него ни на шаг, а Оззи охмуряет очаровательную девушку-археолога Клер Хаддесен, с которой знакомится в Музее естествознания. Она увлечена Оззи, поскольку видит в нем точную копию доисторического человека Pithecanthropus erectus. Выходя из музея, Оззи вынимает одну кость из гигантского скелета диплодока, и скелет рушится па пол. Из-за этой оплошности весь остаток дня за 3 друзьями и их спутницами будет гоняться полиция.

Он с боем добивается от девушки согласия на свидание на крыше Эмпайр-стейт-билдинг. Там встречаются все 3 пары, после чего все вместе отправляются в тур по ночным клубам. Клер и Брунгильда по доброте душевной подговаривают официантов, чтобы те обращались с Мисс Турникет (в миру – Айви Смит) по-царски и поддерживали иллюзии Гэби насчет ее славы. Но ровно в 23.30 Айви исчезает, словно Золушка. Она спешит в некое ярмарочное заведение на Кони-Айленде, где работает, чтобы оплачивать уроки танцев, а Гэби воображает, будто она сказочно богата и посещает только высшее общество.
       На какое-то время Гэби становится кавалером соседки Брунгильды по комнате, симпатичной, простуженной и очень некрасивой коротышки. Он провожает ее домой, а затем вновь отправляется на розыски Айви. Мадам Дилёвска говорит ему, что Айви работает на Кони-Айленде. 5 друзей едут туда на такси Брунгильды, которая ловко сбрасывает с хвоста полицейских.        ►  Режиссерский дебют Стэнли Донена и Джина Келли. Параллельно неореалистической революции в Европе, Увольнительная в город совершает гораздо более скромную, но не менее эффективную революцию в своей области, то есть – в мюзикле. Следуя указаниям продюсера Артура Фрида, готового к любым нововведениям, Комден и Грин переписывают свою популярную бродвейскую пьесу («Увольнительная в город», созданная по мотивам балета «Свободный мужчина», музыку к которому написал Леонард Бёрнстайн, а хореографию поставил Джером Роббинз), а Донен и Келли выводят ее с театральной сцены прямо на улицы Нью-Йорка. Никто и никогда до этого момента не снимал столько планов и музыкальных сцен в настолько обширных и многолюдных реальных городских экстерьерах. И хотя соавторам не удалось осуществить задуманное и снять весь фильм на городских улицах, уличные сцены достаточно хороши, чтобы картина заняла уникальное место в истории кино. Помимо этой структурной революции, в жанр решительно вторгаются новые черты: динамизм, молодость и юмор. Донен гениален в карикатуре, и фильм изобилует бесчисленным количеством юмористических штрихов, легких или подчеркнутых, которые то обозначают детали характера или атмосферы, то обогащают перипетию или же придают дополнительный блеск хореографии.        2 из 6 номеров, добавленных к оригинальному мюзиклу («Доисторический человек», где действие происходит в Музее естествознания, и «Положись на меня», пародия на вестерн, когда Синатра, Джулз Маншин, Бетти Гарретт, Энн Миллер и Элис Пирс пытаются поднять настроение Джину Келли), и по сей день удивляют своей чудесной молодостью, не подвластной моде. Фильм оригинален и тем, что похож на альбом хореографических набросков и эскизов на фоне довольно простых декораций, подчеркивающих движения и позы: в нем используются все возможные фигуры с участием от 1 до 6 танцоров, за исключением массовых номеров с батальонами девушек и армиями статистов, какими пичкал публику Базби Бёркли. Впрочем, новаторство Увольнения в город логично вписывается в естественный ход эволюции, поскольку большая часть его создателей (Донен, Келли, Комден, Грин, Синатра, Джулз Маншин, Бетти Гарретт) уже работали вместе на Отведи меня на матч, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, 1949, Базби Бёркли; Донен и Келли написали сценарий к этому фильму и подготовили музыкальные номера.        Прекрасно осознавая подлинную значимость фильма, Донен (которому в 1949 г. было всего 25 лет) довольно скромно оценивал свой с Келли вклад в развитие мюзикла. «Мы не понимали, что обновляем жанр. Мы никогда не говорили себе: „Сейчас мы сделаем нечто такое, чего не делал раньше никто другой“. Мы всего лишь думали, что именно так надо снимать и понимать мюзикл. Именно так мы его ощущали. Мы были не первое, кто показал людей, поющих на улице. Лубич делал это до нас – и Мамулян тоже. Мы всего лишь немного углубили эту идею, чтобы уравнять в шансах сюжет, музыку, операторскую работу, смех, не выпячивая какой-либо элемент в ущерб другим. Для нас главным в мюзикле была правильная дозировка. Раньше мюзикл всегда оказывался рабом одного из этих элементов» (интервью Даниэлю Паласу и Бертрану Тавернье в журнале «Cahiers du cinéma», № 143, 1963). Наконец, стоит отметить, что этот глоток свежего воздуха, это великолепное использование натуры вовсе не означает движения в сторону реализма. Как отметил Донен много лет спустя, история мюзикла как раз начиналась с реализма: в большинстве сюжетов были показаны певцы и танцоры на репетициях, в процессе создания спектакля. Заставить персонажей петь и танцевать в метро, на улицах, у знаменитых памятников и т. д. было, наоборот, самым антиреалистическим шагом из всех возможных. Зато какой же это праздник, и сколько бодрости он несет с собой.
       N.B. В сновидческом балете «Один день в Нью-Йорке» Синатру и Джулза Маншина рядом с Келли заменяют танцоры Алекс Ромеро и Ли Шеддон. Вместе с Верой-Эллен танцуют Мария Гроскап и Кэрол Хейни, ассистентка-хореограф Келли, которой Донен подарил важную комическую роль в фильме Пижамная игра, The Pajama Game.
