Der nordamerikanische Publizist und Politiker John Reed war 1917 als Kriegsberichterstatter in Russland Zeuge der Oktoberrevolution in Petrograd, begrüßte sie als deren begeisterter Anhänger und beschrieb seine Eindrücke in dem berühmten Buch unter dem vorstehenden Titel, das 1919 in New York mit einem Vorwort von Lenin erschien. Die Kiplingsche Katze "spaziert für sich allein", d. h. lässt sich im Unterschied zu anderen Tieren vom Menschen nicht eigentlich zähmen, obwohl sie Nahrung und Obdach nicht verschmäht, die ihr dieser gewährt, sie will ihre Freiheit nicht ganz aufgeben.
