Сначала это был охотничий термин, означающий голубя, которого с жестокостью прибивали гвоздями к табуретке (stool) и ставили на открытое место, чтобы его крики привлекали других голубей в радиусе ружейных выстрелов. Это выражение стали употреблять в криминальном мире, и оно означало человека, который, играя роль приманки, подстраивал кражу, потом информировал полицию, чтобы та захватила и арестовала всю банду, а затем получал за это деньги. Постепенно значение этого термина расширилось, и он стал обозначать любого полицейского осведомителя. -
