1900-1987Victima, junto a su familia, del famoso terremoto de San Francisco de 1906, ya desde nino se ve obligado a trabajar para asegurar su subsistencia. Veterano del viejo Hollywood de los anos del cine mudo, donde hizo un poco de todo, reparte su labor como director entre Warner Bros, con quien empieza en 1927, y Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, adonde llega despues de la muerte del mitico Irving Thalberg y en donde permanece hasta 1954. Manifiesta una marcada predileccion por las historias melodramaticas y musicales. A pesar de ello, se le recuerda por filmes como Hampa dorada (Little Caesar, 1931), una dura pelicula de gangsters, y por otras de caracter marcadamente social rodadas a comienzos de los 30, y por Quo Vadis (Quo Vadis?, 1950), una pelicula de epoca, de gran presupuesto, que gozo de prestigio en su momento.
