σκολόπαξ, - ακοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: name of a bird, which is usually identified wit ἀσκαλώπας (- πᾶς?) m. (Arist.) and explained as `woodcock, Scolopax rusticola'; cf. Thompson Birds s. vv.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: To σκόλοψ `pole' (referring to the long beak of the snipe), either as cognate with it or folk-etymolog. adapted to it. With the anlaut and auslaut cf. e.g. ἀσπάλαξ beside σπάλαξ (Chantraine Form. 378); ἀσκαλώπας (- πᾶς?) like κελαινώπας (S. in lyr.), βύας, ἀτταγᾶς; the stemvowel after σκάλλω. -- Furnée 344 identifies the word with ἀσκαλωπ- and concludes that it was Pre-Greek.
