(1839-1913) Смоллс, РобертВоенный моряк, политический деятель, герой Гражданской войны [ Civil War] у северян. Будучи негром-рабом, служил матросом на конфедератском фрегате "Плэнтер" [Planter, C.S.S.]. 13 марта 1862 захватил его и передал северянам, блокировавшим выходы из бухты Чарлстона. Зачисленный на военно-морскую службу Союза [ Union], стал капитаном захваченного им судна. В 1868-70 был членом законодательного собрания Южной Каролины от Республиканской партии [ Republican Party].
