I ['sɪŋgjʊlə] nслово, стоящее в единственном числе- singular- in the singularUSAGE:(1.) Форма числа у некоторых групп английских существительных не совпадает с формой их русских соответствий. К таким группам существительных, имеющих в английском языке только форму единственного числа, относятся: (а.) advice совет; information сведения; research исследование; homework домашнее задание; fruit фрукты; knowledge знания. Эти существительные согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе и определяются только местоимениями some, any, little, much. В русском языке соотноссительные существительные имеют формы и единственного, и множественного числа; (б) money деньги; cream сливки; twilight сумерки; margin поля (тетради). Их русские соответствия имеют только форму множественного чила; (в) police полиция; cattle скот; youth молодежь; people люди. Эти существительные имеют только форму единственного числа, но согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе; их русские соответствия согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе, кроме существительного people люди. (2.) Существительные, определяемые словами every, each, the whole употребляются в форме единственного числа и согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе, в отличие от их русских соответствий, которые связаны со словом "все" и поэтому требуют глагола во множественном числе: Every student has to fulfill his program. Все студенты обязаны выполнять свою программу. Each town is connected with the city. Все провинциальные города связаны с этим главным городом. (3.) Субстантивированные прилагательные и причастия типа the dead, the sick, the unemployed, имеющие собирательное значение, но форму единственного числа, согласуются с глаголом во множественном числе: The unemployed are regestered for wellfare.
