Группа красящих веществ, содержащихся в животных, растительных и микробных клетках и обусловливающих их окраску; ряд пигментов играет важнейшую роль в жизнедеятельности организмов. Способность к образованию пигментов детерминирована генетически и поэтому может использоваться в качестве характерного признака (см. также бактериохлорофилл, каротиноиды, меланины, пиоцианин, пирролы и пульхерримин).
Главный фотосинтетический пигмент организма; первичным пигментом у растений является хлорофилл, у бактерий – бактериохлорофилл.
