Форма отношения полов, при которой самец оплодотворяет более одной самки в течение репродуктивного сезона; различают территориальную (наличие индивидуальных участков самок на территории, охраняемых одним самцом), гаремную (наличие группы самок у одного самца только в период размножения) и облигатную (при наличии долго существующих группировок из самца и нескольких самок); у общественных насекомых П. - наличие нескольких размножающихся самок (цариц) в колонии.
