81 Persian Rugs
These are the finest among Oriental rugs and are made of silk, cotton or wool. The warp is mostly cotton, with a short, close, velvet-like pile of silk or wool. Colours are very soft and lustrous, in designs of floral and animal patterns. Usually oblong shape. There are no undecorated spaces of plain colour. The borders are characteristic Persian ornament and the Herati design is a favourite centre motif as well as the " Pear." The use of a cotton warp is distinctive, since nearly all other Eastern rugs have wool (see Rug Designs) -
82 Persian Shawl
A large square of silk or goats' hair fabric, said to have been the original of the Kashmir shawl. The silk shawls are known as Hussein Kuli Kani, probably from the name of the original designer. Shawls of the other kind are made with the soft under-hair of the Persian goat, dyed and spun, and woven in the well-known pine pattern. These shawls are inferior to Kashmir (or Cashmere) shawls, but have a very fine quality of their own. -

96 Persian Cords
A plain weave cloth with a pattern formed by various warp ends working in 2's forming cords. Also known as the " Ottoman Cord," but this is a faulty description (see Ottoman). A typical cloth is made 72 ends and 112 picks per inch, 2/60's cotton warp, 60's botany weft. -
97 Persian Knot
One of the two knots in which the pile is tied in hand-made Oriental rugs and carpets. A loop is formed around the warp thread and is tightened by being pulled, thus the pile is placed between all warp threads. Also called senna knot. -
98 Persian Lawn
A fine, plain sheer linen fabric, often printed, but mostly white or light colours. -
99 Persian Prints
A low-grade plain weave Burnley printer in the gorgeous colours desired by the Eastern peoples. Usually made 46-in. to 48-in., splits 50 ends and 46 picks per inch, 36's warp, 40's weft. Low-class yarns. -
100 Persian Wool
The wool is usually exported washed and sorted into white and coloured. Khorassan, is the best type, and the spring clip affords a good combing staple, rather finer than a carpet wool. The coloured wool is used for coarse felts. From Bunder Abbas two classes of wool are shipped: " Kurki," and " Meherjun." Bushire wools come from South Persia, and are similar to those from Bussorah, but they are even dirtier and less desirable.
