Концептуальный анализ деловых взаимоотношений между двумя партнерами, проведенный английским ученым Фрэнсисом Эджвортом (1845-1926) с использованием кривых безразличия. Для составления таблицы берется карта безразличия партнера B, отображающая его предпочтения относительно двух товаров X и Y и перевернутая карта безразличия партнера А для тех же двух товаров X и Y. Личные предпочтения партнера А отображаются тремя кривыми безразличия A1, A2 и А3. Чем больше кривая удалена от начала координат ОА, тем выше уровень удовлетворения потребностей. Аналогично представляются предпочтения партнера B. Предпочтения обоих партнеров, отдаваемые ими либо товару X, либо товару Y, отражаются в степени наклона кривых безразличия, а каждая точка на этих кривых показывает предельную норму замещения одного товара другим (см. Marginal rate of substitution). Только в точках касания кривых безразличия обоих партнеров E, F и G предельная норма замещения будет одинаковой, т.е. они равнозначно оценивают полезность товаров. В любой другой точке, скажем Z, оба партнера могут извлечь выгоду, торгуя друг с другом. В точке Z партнер А располагает большим количеством товара X, но у него мало товара Y. Следовательно, товар Y для него является более ценным, чем товар X, и он готов продать большое количество товара X (X1,X3), чтобы получить взамен хотя бы не- большое количество товара Y (Y1,Y2).
