1899-1984Nacido en Portland, Oregon, director de fotografia, experto en efectos especiales y realizador, Byron Haskin es uno de esos grandes profesionales de Hollywood que no parecen gozar del prestigio intelectual necesario pero que, por el contrario, construyen productos de una solidez tal que rozan la genialidad. Eso les ocurre a peliculas como La isla del tesoro (Treasure Island, 1950), La guerra de los mundos (The War of the Worlds, 1953) o Cuando ruge la marabunta (The Naked Jungle, 1954). Estudia en Berkeley, trabaja para International Newsreels, Pathe News y el San Francisco News, antes de convertirse en operador ayudante. Aunque en 1927 rueda cuatro filmes mudos como director, se centra de inmediato en su actividad de director de fotografia, conformando una filmografia de mas de treinta titulos que llega hasta mediados de los anos 30. Despues, amplia su campo de accion, haciendose especialista, y de los buenos, en efectos especiales: Dodge, ciudad sin ley (Dodge City, Michael Curtiz, 1939), El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, Raoul Walsh, 1941) o Arsenico por compasion (Arsenic and Old Lace, Frank Capra, 1944) son algunas de las peliculas en las que colaboro en este cometido antes de iniciar, realmente, su carrera como director. Aunque no es un especialista del western, los pocos que hizo son muy correctos, y Libertad o muerte es realmente interesante, aunque se les puede achacar que les falta espiritu, acaso por cierta falta de ritmo narrativo, que es el defecto del que mas se ha acusado a Haskin.Warpath. 1951. 95 minutos.
