Но исступленная страсть к накоплению капитала, сдерживать которую она больше не в силах, делает ее полноправным членом патологической семейки, подарившей Уолшу немало персонажей в послевоенную пору.Каждый раз, берясь снимать широкоэкранный фильм, Уолш использует широкий формат разнообразно и превосходно. Здесь, работая с весьма экономичным сценарием, с минимальным количеством съемочных объектов и сцен, он при помощи широкоэкранного формата придает изобразительному ряду и драматургии неспешный, спокойный ритм, позволяющий наблюдать за героиней невозмутимо и критически – вблизи, но соблюдая дистанцию. Его гений также очевиден в том, как блистательно он в нескольких сценах или планах набрасывает точный, но все же тонкий силуэт персонажа второго плана (владелица дансинга, сыгранная Агнес Мурхед), незабываемый контур эпизодического героя (возбужденный и нервный матрос, разоряющийся на фишках ради карточной партии с танцовщицей).
