Unübersetzbarer umgangssprachlicher Ausdruck, dem folgende Szene aus "Hochzeit in Malinowka", einer populären sowjetischen Operette, Text von L. Juchwid und W. Tipot, Musik von B. Alexandrow, zugrunde liegt: Ein aus dem 1. Weltkrieg heimkehrender russischer Soldat, der nach seinen Worten "durch ganz Europa marschiert" ist, führt in einem Dorf dem damals modischen Tanz Twostep vor, aus dessen englischer Bezeichnung er volksetymoligisch die ähnlich klingende russische Wortverbindung В ту степь, wörtlich: In jene Steppe macht. Aus dieser Wortfügung hat sich der Ausdruck Не в ту степь (танцева́ть) (scherzh., salopp) falsch tanzen, einen ganz anderen Tanz tanzen entwickelt, im weiteren Sinn: etw. verkehrt machen ≈ umgekehrt wird ein Schuh daraus. -
