Nota d'usoCloth è una stoffa di fibre naturali o sintetiche tessute o lavorate a maglia, oppure un pezzo di tessuto usato per asciugare, pulire, coprire qualcosa, ecc.: a dish cloth, uno strofinaccio; a soft damp cloth, una pezza morbida e umida. Il plurale di cloth è cloths: Where do you keep your cloths and washing up liquid?, dove tieni gli strofinacci e il detersivo?Clothes significa, invece, “vestiti, indumenti” ed è un sostantivo soltanto plurale; al singolare si usano espressioni formali come garment, piece of clothing o article of clothing oppure il nome specifico del tipo di vestito ( shirt, dress, trousers, ecc.). -

Nota d'usoI sostantivi come team sono chiamati collettivi perché indicano un gruppo di persone. In inglese possono essere seguiti dal verbo al singolare o al plurale, a seconda del contesto e di ciò che vuole esprimere chi parla. In generale, se si pensa al sostantivo in modo impersonale, si sceglie il singolare: The team is now complete, ora la squadra è al completo. Se invece si pensa alle singole persone che fanno cose diverse all'interno del gruppo, si sceglie il plurale: The team are playing well at the moment, in questo momento la squadra sta giocando bene. Nota d'usoIl verbo to vote, nel significato di votare per un candidato o partito, può essere seguito o meno dalla preposizione for. Quando si parla di un candidato in particolare, di solito non si usa alcuna preposizione: I'm going to vote Smith, voterò per Smith. Lo stesso accade se si usa il nome di un partito come aggettivo: He's always voted Labour, ha sempre votato laburista.
