Любой вопрос, который служит причиной дискуссии или спора. Во времена англосаксов a moot называлось собрание уважаемых граждан, на котором решались сложные вопросы местного управления, и к началу Средневековья оно приобрело значение «дискуссия». Это слово перекочевало в юридические круги и стало также обозначать дебаты среди студентов-юристов, на которых интересные юридические вопросы обсуждались и освещались как гипотетические случаи из практики. Такие собрания всё ещё существуют на университетских юридических факультетах. К XVI в. слово moot стало использоваться как прилагательное, означающее «спорный», от которого образовалось сочетание moot point, означающее вопрос или проблему, открытые для дебатов или дальнейших обсуждений.I have no objection to your mother visiting us over Christmas, but who is going to buy her ticket and where she is going to stay are moot points. — Я не возражаю против того, чтобы твоя мама приехала на Рождество, но кто будет покупать ей билет и где она остановится — это спорные вопросы.
