В начале 1961 подал заявление о приеме в Университет Миссисипи [ Mississippi, University of], но не был принят, несмотря на обязательную десегрегацию учебных заведений и решение Верховного суда [ Supreme Court, U.S.] по делу "Браун против Совета по образованию" [ Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas]. Не помогло и то, что с помощью Национальной ассоциации содействия прогрессу цветного населения [ National Association for the Advancement of Colored People] Мередит выиграл дело в суде. После процесса и приезда Мередита в сопровождении федеральных маршалов [ marshal, U.S.] в университете и городке Оксфорд [ Oxford] начались беспорядки под расистскими лозунгами. Для их пресечения в октябре 1962 президент Дж. Кеннеди [ Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (JFK)] и министр юстиции Р. Кеннеди [ Kennedy, Robert Francis (Bobby) (RFK)] перевели национальную гвардию штата [ National Guard] из юрисдикции губернатора штата в федеральное подчинение. В ходе восстановления порядка погибло два человека. Мередит был допущен к занятиям, но в течение двух семестров жил и учился под охраной федеральных маршалов. В 1966 организовал марш протеста против сегрегации из г. Мемфиса, шт. Тенесси, в г. Джексон, шт. Миссисипи.
