1 Lustre
A fabric that has a face sheen or lustre given to it through mercerising or schreinering which allows light reflection on the threads has a " lustre " finish. -
2 Finish
Very few cotton fabrics are suitable for use after leaving the loom until they have passed through some finishing process. All fabrics after bleaching, dyeing or printing are also passed through the final operation of" finishing " which varies according to the fabric and the purpose it is intended for. There are numerous different " finishes " as each firm has its own styles, but all are mainly physical (see Finishing). Various terms are used in the trade for the several properties required, such as - Brightness, Chasing, Clothiness, Closing, Firmness, Flatness, Glaze, Hardness, Lustre, Mellow, Threadiness, and Elastic Finish. See under each of these names. -
3 Schreiner Finish
A special finish used largely in the finishing of black cotton sateens, Italians, etc. It is obtained by means of a machine similar to but heavier than a calender. A steel bowl is engraved with fine diagonal lines varying from about 150 to 350 per inch, depending upon the finish required. Two bowls are used, the top engraved steel and the bottom compressed cotton. Great pressure is applied to the bowls in order to emboss the fabric with the fine lines. As a rule the fabrics for Schreinering are mercerised beforehand. The lustre on the finished cloth is greatly enhanced by Schreinering. The best lustre is obtained when the engraved lines on the bowl run as nearly as possible parallel with the individual fibres in the yarn. The Schreiner effect is not permanent, it is removed by washing. -
4 Laresa Finish
A special finish for cellulose acetate fabrics. The effect given has the appearance of a jacquard design and is produced by varying the lustre. The finish can be applied to plains and satins and is the property of the Bleachers' Association Ltd. -
5 China Finish
A heavy stiffening finish imparted to cotton cloth which makes the fabric hard, yet very bright. The mixture used is mostly China clay. The cloth is first passed through a cold water mangle and then through the stiffening mangle once or twice. Added lustre is obtained by calendering. -
6 Sateen Finish
A finish to imitate satins. It is glossy, with as much lustre as possible and with a fairly crisp feel. The goods are usually starched, then dried on the tins, damped, and glazed on the calender. -
7 Dress-Pace Finish
Such cloths as beavers, billiard cloth, doeskins, pilots, and other heavily felted and raised woollen fabrics, are dress-face finished. During the finishing the fabrics are made dense and fibrous by " felting," then the fibres are drawn to the surface, straightened and combed in one direction by " raising " and lustre is given in a boiling process. The finished fabric is covered with a short nap so that the weave is entirely hidden. -

12 Crepe Janigor
A dress crepe fabric made in America. It is of the heavy rib type, which through an illusion of colour seems to have ribs of different sizes. The warp is composed of alternate ends of viscose rayon and dull lustre acetate (Albene, the dull lustre Rhodiaseta yarn). The weft is three-fold worsted yarn. When cross-dyed the fabric shows different shadings between the alternate picks. A dull lustre finish is given to the cloth. -
