Способность к мгновенному пониманию сути ситуации или собственных проблем либо акт такого понимания. В психиатрии термин часто применяется для обозначения осознания пациентом собственного психического нездоровья, которое типичным образом отсутствует при психозах, но имеет место при неврозах. В психоанализе термин применяется шире — в значении понимания динамических факторов, причастных к разрешению конфликта, — и рассматривается в качестве важного достижения, необходимого для терапевтического изменения. Такое понимание требует определенной свободы ассоциаций, самонаблюдения, размышления, проницательности, ведущих к объективности (чему способствует психоаналитическая ситуация). Инсайт является продуктом синтезирующих и интегрирующих функций Я.В обычном употреблении инсайт означает мгновенное ясное понимание, достигаемое, по-видимому, интуитивно. В процессе психоаналитического лечения он может проявиться в виде внезапного озарения или понимания, называемого "ага"-переживанием, благодаря которому определяющие факторы и связи идеи или фрагмента поведения либо более глобальные аспекты индивидуального способа видения и чувствования видятся в перспективе. Чаще, однако, инсайт достигается постепенно, сопровождаясь медленно прогрессирующим знанием о себе. По мере интерпретации сопротивлений вытесненное идеационное содержание возвращается и теперь принимается Я, благодаря чему облегчается психическая реорганизация. Окончательный инсайт содержит два компонента — аффективный и когнитивный; само по себе когнитивное осознание не приводит к терапевтическому изменению.
