Over the century, the IOC has awarded trophies entrusted to it by leading sports personalities, for example the Mohammed Taher Trophy. Mohammed Taher, an Egyptian statesman, was an IOC member from 1934 to 1968, then an honorary member until his death in 1970. The trophy, endowed in 1950, was awarded until 1971 to an athlete whose career and sporting merits warranted a special distinction.
