foot·ball [ʼfʊtbɔ:l] n(Am) Football-¿ Kultur?Der amerikanische football ist anders als der europäische Fußball, der in den USA soccer genannt wird. Zwei Mannschaften mit je elf Spielern versuchen den eiförmigen Lederball über die gegnerische Grundlinie zu platzieren. Punkte können hauptsächlich dadurch erzielt werden, dass der Ball über die Grundlinie des Gegners getragen wird ( touchdown) oder durch die gegnerischen Torstangen geschossen wird ( field goal). Jede der vier Spielzeiten à 15 Minuten fängt mit einem kickoff an, d.h. ein Spieler tritt den Ball und seine Mitspieler versuchen diesen mit den Händen zu fangen, um damit hinter die Grundlinie zu gelangen. Die Gegenseite stoppt den Spieler mit dem Ball durch tackling, wobei man ihn mit den Armen festhält und zu Boden drückt. -
