Получил известность как соавтор гипотезы лингвистической относительности (гипотезы Сепира-Уорфа) [Whorf-Sapir hypothesis, the Whorf (Whorfian) hypothesis], согласно которой структура языка определяет структуру мышления и способ познания внешнего мира. В 1918 окончил Массачусетский технологический институт [ Massachusetts Institute of Technology] по специальности химическое машиностроение и в том же году стал инспектором по предотвращению пожаров Хартфордской компании страхования от пожаров [Hartford Fire Insurance Company] и проработал в ней всю жизнь. Наблюдения над причинами пожаров привели его к мысли о том, что зачастую именно определение бочки из-под горючих материалов словом "пустая" лишает людей бдительности, заставляя забыть, что "пустая" бочка на самом деле заполнена горюче-взрывчатой газовой смесью и крайне пожароопасна. В 1931 по вечерам прошел курс лингвистики в Йельском университете [ Yale University] под руководством Э. Сепира [ Sapir, Edward]; изучал иврит, а также языки майя и ацтеков, работал совместно с Э. Сепиром над проблемами этнолингвистики.
