110 Clear Finish
This term is generally applied to the finish given to warp-faced woollen fabrics, and means that after finishing, the weave is clearly visible. The fabric is felted to give a compact structure, then raised or brushed and afterwards is cropped to remove loose fibres from the face. Such material as Venetians, Whipcords, Wool Bedford Cords, Botany Twills, etc., are clear finished. -
111 Drap Edredon
A French coating material, made of the finest wool and light in weight although with a full handle. Very soft and warm. Fulled during finishing. -
112 Dyeing
The process of applying colour to yarns or fabrics. The material is first cleared of all dirt by boiling and washing (often the goods are bleached). They are then rinsed, then passed through the dye bath, rinsed again and dried. ————————RESIST PRINTING, or DYEINGIn this style of work the design is printed on the cloth with a substance that resists the dye into which the piece is placed. After dyeing and finishing the design shows white on a coloured ground. This process was first done on a commercial scale in 1802 by Robert Peel, Bury, but was practised prior to 1533, when specimens were found in Peru. ———————— A process in dyeing, consisting of the application of a chrome mordant to a previously dyed fabric (also termed " after treating ") -
113 Keymo Finish
A finishing process that renders woollens and worsteds unshrinkable by treating in a solution containing sulphuric acid. Useful for shirtings, flannels and sports fabrics. The material must be all wool, as other fibres are destroyed by the action of the acid. -
114 Lustreing
A woollen fabric finishing process. After napping, such material as kerseys, beavers, thibets, tricots, plushes, Venetians, military cloths, and all worsteds require a special operation known as steam lustreing. Steam is forced through the cloth for about five minutes followed by cold water. The steam brings out the lustre and the cold water sets it. -
115 Mitering
A method of joining two pieces of material, such as lace, insertion, embroidery, or finishing a hem, at an equally divided angle, as a corner. -
116 Seam Binding
Material for finishing edges, and made in narrow strips 6 to 9 yards long. Cotton binding, or bias binding, has its edges turned ready for application. Silk seam binding resembles light-weight taffeta ribbon. -
117 Suede Finish
This is a finishing process to give a fabric the soft and smooth handle of chamois leather. It is produced by rubbing the fibres by means of rapidly revolving rollers covered with carborundum or some other material The fabric is passed in a stretched condition through the machine. -
118 Viscose
Viscose was discovered by two English chemists, Charles F. Cross and E. J. Be van, working in collaboration at Kew, near London, who found that when cellulose was treated with disulphide of carbon in the presence of caustic soda, it was converted into a golden yellow plastic compound which dissolved readily in water. A solution of the plastic was of such viscosity that it was named " viscose," a name that was destined to become world famous, seeing that round about 88 per cent of the world production of rayon is now made by the viscose process. In 1892 Cross and Bevan were granted a patent on the viscose process and it was applied to many purposes before the production of a textile thread was successfully accomplished. Fundamentally, the manufacture of viscose rayon is fairly simple. The raw material may be wood pulp, pulp from cotton linters, or a mixture of the two. The greater part of the world's viscose is made from wood pulp. Viscose rayon manufacture comprises seven distinct treatments as follows: - 1. Making and purifying the cotton or wood pulp which forms the cellulose base. 2. Caustic soda treatment of the cellulose base thereby forming alkali cellulose. 3. Treatment of alkali cellulose with carbon disulphide, forming cellulose xanthate. 4. Dissolving the cellulose xanthate in weak caustic soda to form cellulose solution or viscose. 5. Spinning viscose into yarn. 6. Bleaching, purification and finishing of the yarn. 7. Preparing the yarn for weaving and knitting. -
