5 Serge
SARGE, SERGEA coarse, woollen cloth known as early as the 12th century, a finer quality being called " say." It was much used during the Middle Ages for all portions of attire by the poorer classes, and in the piece for the decoration of houses. ————————SERGE (U.S.A.)The specification issued by the U.S.A. Government is as follows: - Cotton and worsted serge for overcoat lining shall be of single or 2-ply cotton warp and single or 2-ply worsted filling, the wool to be not below 46's grade; the width shall be full 36-in. exclusive of the selvedge and shall weigh from 6-oz. to 7-oz. per linear yard; it shall be woven in regular serge weave and constructed so as to give a fabric with good body and twill line on the face and containing approximately equal quantities of worsted and cotton yarns throughout; to be navy-blue, fast to the light, with both sets of threads and to be put up into bookfold. ———————— This term was formerly applied in Yorkshire to rough handling coarse wool fabrics woven in a twill design. An old 6-end serge was a simple diagonal 3 up, 1 down, 1 up, 1 down. The term serge is now almost universally understood to mean the 2 & 2 twill, and sometimes the 3 & 3 and the 4 & 4 twills. In wool fabrics it is the practice to add to the name serge, the definition of botany to distinguish fine wool serges from cross-bred qualities. A typical botany worsted serge, 2 & 2 twill weave, 21-02. per yard, 56/58-in. is made with 2/20's worsted 64/70's quality, S twist, 46 ends and 46 picks per inch, 72-in. wide in loom, woven white arid piece-dyed. The cloth is clear finished so as to obtain a well-defined twill effect. A usual weight for ladies' costume serge is 12/13-oz. per yard. Serges are made in many qualities ranging from 12-oz. to 26-oz. per yard. Crossbred worsted yarns are used in making the rougher and stronger types, while woollen yarns are also used. A serge which is extensively used in uniforms for transport workers is made with two-fold cross-bred worsted yarn for warp and single Cheviot woollen yarn for weft. The cloth is woven white or grey and piece-dyed. -
6 Botany Wools
(1) All fine Australian wools are better known in Great Britain as Botany wools, and the term is used extensively in the United States. The district adjacent to this bay is noted for the production of fine wools (2) General term for all classes of fine wool. They are sorted according to counts they will spin, without any other names. -

Cloaks were made of velvet, taffeta and other materials. Some cloaks were short, some long, some trailing, and styles were numerous. In some cases they were faced with lace, gold and silk. -
9 Coventry Blue
The term given to a vivid indigo blue embroidery thread in Queen Elizabeth's time, made solely in the town of Coventry. It was of fine wool, and was principally used for embroidering linen. William Stafford, 1581, in the following passage: " I have heard say that the chiefe trade of Coventry was heretofore in making blue threde, and then the towne was riche, even upon that trade, in manner only: and now our threde comes all from beyonde sea; wherefore that trade is now decaied, and thereby the town likewise." -

14 Botany
The finest of worsted yarns, and used for the best fabrics. A term applied to fine Australian wools of best quality. The fibre is fairly short and curly and has a large number of waves and serrations to the inch. (The term was originally applied to merino wool grown near Botany Bay, Australia). Today the terms " Botany " and " Merino " mean the same thing, viz., the fine, wavy wool clipped from the merino sheep. In the trade it is usual to refer to these fine wools as merino, while in the raw state, and as botany during processing and afterwards. -

16 Combing
This term is used literally and denotes the combing of fibrous materials in sliver form by mechanically actuated combs, or by hand-operated combs. In general, the objects in combing are two, namely (1) to obtain the maximum parallelisation of the fibres, and (2) to remove impurities and undesired short fibres. Combing machines differ considerably in their action on fibres, and in practice the different types of combs are used in somewhat restricted fields. For combing cotton the Nasmith and Heilmann combs are principally used. In the United States of America the Whitin comb is much used. In all three of these machines successive rows of combs are set in cylinders, the material being presented for combing in the form of thin narrow laps, which after combing are formed into a sliver and coiled in a can. For combing wool, four types of comb are in use, namely, the Noble, Lister, Holden and Heilmann. Also see under each name. The combs of the Noble machine are in the form of pins set vertically in one large and two small circles with appropriate mechanism for dabbing the wool into the pins of the combs and means for drawing off the combed wool in a continuous sliver, which is wound into a ball and constitutes the " top " of the worsted trade. The machine has a high production and is suitable for use on a large variety of wools, particularly those of 4-in. to 8-in. staple. The Lister comb is specially suitable for long wools. The combing mechanism includes a gill-box and comb circle. The Holden comb is suitable for wools of 3-in. to 6-in. staple, and of 50's to 70's quality. The Heilmann, also known as the " rectilinear " comb, is used for short wools, say, up to about 2-in. staple, and when used for wool is arranged differently for feed and delivery than for combing cotton. It is becoming of increasing importance for combing short fibred wools for subsequent spinning into fine, full handling hosiery yarns. -
17 Cap-Spinning
This is a spinner's term given to the method of spinning on the cap-spinning frame in which each spindle has a metal cap. The threads pass round the rim as they are wound on the bobbin. The process is only used for botany and fine cross-bred wool yarns. The difference between the cap and the flyer and also the ring, is in the method of twisting and winding on. In the cap frame the spindle is stationary, but on it, and resting on the lifter-plate, runs a tube or shell which has a wharle at the bottom, by which it is driven. The bobbin fits on the barrel, being positively driven by means of a peg fixed over the wharle. Winding-on is aided by a removable cap, which guides the end on to the bobbin (worked in and out of the cap by the lifter) as the bobbin revolves, and causes it to " balloon " and draw round the bottom of the cap. As there are only tube and bobbin to drive, a much greater speed can be obtained - 6,000 to 7,000 revs. per minute - without excessive vibration on this frame; but on the other hand, owing to the centrifugal force on the thread, a rougher yam is produced. With short and fine merino wool this roughness is not too marked for many yarns; but on the coarse and open qualities the roughness is sufficient to make them almost useless. -

19 Batiste
Is a cloth of French origin. The term is now applied to a light Swiss-finished cloth, made from ecru coloured yarns when cotton, and grey yarns when flax is used. It is very fine in quality, and as many as 15 yards of 32-in. cloth are required to weigh 1-lb.; 80's to 100's warp and 100's to 160's weft are used in the cotton variety. In flax two qualities are: - 1/42, 86 X 78 per inch, 110's/140's; 2/42-in., 132 X 108 per inch, 22's/240's. This latter cloth is hand woven. A low Batiste is shipped to China and India and is, in fact, merely a cheap plain cloth with a special finish termed a " Batiste Finish." Generally woven such as follows: 50-in. splits, 54 X 52, 40/46. A wool Batiste is also made from very fine yarns and is very similar to nun's veiling. Generally dyed in light shades and used for good quality underclothing. -
20 Broadcloth
Given to an all-cotton cloth used for many dress purposes, bleached, dyed and printed 35-in./90 yards 124 X 64 per inch, 36's/40's yarns, 22-lb. plain weave. Better qualities have two-fold warp or two-fold warp and weft, generally 2/80's Egyptian, which greatly resemble Lancashire poplins. ———————— A term that in many districts was used to indicate garments worn by the clergy.
