Figures to be published this week by the Association of British Insurers will show that life assurers have issued "red" or "amber" warning letters to 60 per cent of endowment mortgage holders telling them to save more. If borrowers do not take action they are likely to face shortfalls of thousands of pounds when their mortgage comes to an end and the endowment is not enough to pay off the loan.
