Разница между совокупными доходами и совокупными экономическими издержками фирмы (включающими альтернативные издержки распределения капитала владельца) за определенный период. Ее важно отличать от фактической прибыли, которая измеряется разницей только между доходами и собственно издержками (включающими действительные издержки и амортизационные отчисления). При отрицательной Э.п. рационален уход фирмы с рынка. В условиях долговременного равновесия Э.п. всех фирм стремится к нулю, но эта тенденция означает не то, что фирмы в отрасли работают неэффективно, а то, что сама отрасль является конкурентной. ( См. Конкурентное равновесие). Лишь те фирмы, которые имеют собственные технические патенты или иные преимущества, позволяющие выпускать продукцию с издержками более низкими, чем у других, на краткосрочном этапе получают повышенную Э.п., часто называемую сверхприбылью.

Подход к оценке бизнеса, при котором в качестве критерия используется не бухгалтерская прибыль, а экономическая прибыль (см.). Точно так же, как модель дисконтированного денежного потока может использоваться и для оценки акций (дисконтирование дивиденда), и для оценки капиталов (свободный денежный поток фирмы), так и модель экономической прибыли может применяться либо к акции (остаточный доход), либо к капиталу (часто к EVATM, добавленной экономической стоимости). Модель экономической прибыли исходит из того, что стоимость является балансовой статьей (то, что затрачено на приобретение актива) плюс или минус поправки на тот факт, что актив дает доход больший или меньший того, что ожидалось.
