• East Village, the Ист-Виллидж, район Манхаттана в Нью- Йорке (к востоку от Бродвея, с центром — площадью Св. Марка). Выделился из Гринвич- Виллиджа [Greenwich Village]. Один из районов южного Манхэттена [ Manhattan] к востоку от Гринич-виллиджа [ Greenwich Village]. В XIX в. здесь жила местная аристократия: Асторы [ Astor, John Jacob], Вандербилты [Vanderbuilt family], П. Стайвесант [ Stuyvesant, Peter], но в начале 1900-х они переселились в центр города, а Ист-Виллидж начал заселяться иммигрантами. Чрезвычайно разнообразен этнически самая крупная община - украинская ("Маленькая Украина" [Little Ukraine]) - 30 тыс. человек; здесь живут также выходцы из стран Латинской Америки, армяне, чехи, евреи, поляки, русские, немцы. В 60-е гг. был известен как один из центров городской контркультуры [ counterculture] и колоний непризнанных художников. По-прежнему считается довольно бедным, хотя в ходе реконструкции последних лет постепенно начинает превращаться в район среднего класса. Славится художественными галереями, ресторанами, ночными клубами. В 1960-70-х гг. считался одним из наиболее криминогенных, а 6-я улица, например, была городским "центром" наркоманов. Сегодня на ней - множество недорогих кафе (преимущественно индийских - "Маленькая Индия" [Little India]) и магазинчиков. Среди культурных центров этого многоликого квартала - Церковь Св.
