45 arguable
•• arguable, arguably
•• Arguable that can be argued about (Oxford American Dictionary).
Так, Oxford American Dictionary считает достаточным open to doubt, dispute, not certain (думаю, определение неудовлетворительное); Хорнби, не мудрствуя лукаво, предлагает that can be argued about (здесь уже есть намек на «двойное значение», но по сути определение сводится к русскому слову спорный). Webster’s Third New International: capable of being argued; open to argument, dispute, or question. Здесь же удачный пример: It is arguable that... (open to argument) спорный. 2. (demonstrable by argument) доказуемый.
I think this is arguable It is arguable that...
He is arguably the best goalkeeper in the league.
•• The endowment’s larger point – that book reading in general is down, though not as much as what it considers purely literary reading – seems inarguable. (New York Times)
Open to argument: an arguable question, still unresolved. 2. That can be argued plausibly; defensible in argument: three arguable points of law.)
International Herald Tribune:
•• <...> quite a few people thought they knew enough about the EU to dislike it. It’s arguably an unfair judgment, because the EU can reasonably be said to be delivering the goods on several fronts.
•• Стилистически явно не шедевр (arguably... reasonably... can be said to be delivering) – но так «у них» пишут.
