n оркестр (1). Русскому оркестр соответствуют английские band и orchestra. Band относится к музыкальным коллективам, исполняющим, главным образом, легкую, популярную, джазовую музыку. Музыканты, входящие в band, играют, в основном, на духовых, ударных и щипковых инструментах:a jazz band — джаз-банд;
a brass band — духовой оркестр;
a millitary band — военный оркестр.
Orchestra, в отличие от band, это чаще всего большая группа музыкантов, играющих на любых инструментах — струнных, ударных, щипковых — и исполняющих классическую, серьезную музыку:a philharmonic orchestra — оркестр филармонии,
a chamber orchestra — камерный оркестр.
