С увеличением потребления единиц продукта (например плиток шоколада) общая полезность сначала растет, однако затем начинает снижаться, поскольку потребность в этом продукте постепенно насыщается. Такая закономерность называется убывающей предельной полезностью (см. Diminishing marginal utility). Альфред Маршалл
Английский экономист, основоположник неоклассического направления в экономической теории. В своем труде «Принципы экономической науки» (1890 г.) ученый разработал математическую зависимость между экономическими величинами. Маршалл показал, что стоимость товара определяется его предельной полезностью, а удовлетворение от потребления каждой последующей единицы этого товара снижается. Таким образом, ему удалось объяснить суть парадокса стоимости (см. Paradox of value). Ученый нашел также объяснение нисходящего направления кривой спроса (см. Demand curve) и сути излишка потребителя (см. Consumer surplus). Важное место в работах Маршалла занимает концепция эластичности спроса. Маршалл утверждал, что стоимость определяется как спросом, так и предложением, причем спрос определяет цену и объем производства в коротком периоде, а изменения факторных затрат и издержек производства влияют на цену в долгосрочном периоде. Цена предложения, по Маршаллу, зависит от издержек производства. Анализируя краткосрочные издержки, он пришел к выводу, что предельный продукт всех ресурсов имеет тенденцию к уменьшению по мере того, как переменные факторы присоединяются к постоянным (закон убывающей отдачи).
