Сомнительный комплимент. Общеизвестно, что красота и обаяние не привилегия аристократических классов, и высокопоставленные мужчины очень часто влюблялись в простых крестьянских девушек. Чтобы не поощрять такие увлечения, средневековые немцы ставили любые возможные преграды между простолюдинами и князьями. Если аристократ женился на женщине более низкого происхождения, проводилась специальная брачная церемония. Обряд отличался от обычного тем, что жених подавал своей невесте левую, а не правую руку. Для неискушённого зрителя всё выглядело как обычно, но брак «левой руки» только назывался браком. Ни жена, ни дети не могли получить титул или наследство. Естественно, никакую жену не могло удовлетворить подобное положение, и подчас возникали юридические сложности. Всё это и явилось причиной возникновения данного выражения, обозначающего нечто обманчивое, иллюзорное и называющееся left-handed. После XVI в. брачные церемонии «левой руки» стали редкостью, но это явление оставило яркий след и сохранилось в выражении a left-handed compliment.English-Russian dictionary of expressions > left-handed compliment
