Важнейшая циклическая последовательность метаболических реакций у аэробных организмов (эу- и прокариот), в результате которых происходит последовательное окислительно-восстановительное превращение ди- и трикарбоновых кислот, обеспечивающее полное окисление продуктов метаболизма белков, жиров и углеводов до СО2 и Н2О; дегидрогеназы Ц.т.к. являются основными поставщиками электронов в дыхательную цепь; основные ферменты Ц.т.к.аконитаза, изоцитратдегидрогеназа, сукцинатдегидрогеназа, фумараза, малатдегидрогеназа и др., всего Ц.т.к. включает 8 ферментативных реакций; первоначально схема Ц.т.к. была предложена Г. Кребсом в 1940 (в 1953 он удостоен Нобелевской премии).
