Il s'agit de feuilletons diffusés à raison de trois ou quatre épisodes par semaine sur une très longue période. Ainsi le feuilleton radiophonique 'The Archers' débuta en 1951 sur la BBC, et 'Coronation Street' est diffusé à la télévision britannique depuis 1960. Les soap operas sont ainsi nommés car les premiers d'entre eux étaient financés par des marques de détergents, aux États-Unis. Il n'est pas rare que les soap operas alimentent les conversations de tous les jours, ou soient le sujet d'articles de journaux. Les soap operas britanniques ('Eastenders' et 'Coronation Street' par exemple) ont souvent pour cadre le milieu ouvrier et diffèrent en cela de leurs équivalents américains et australiens dont le ton est beaucoup moins réaliste et dont l'action se déroule le plus souvent dans des milieux privilégiés.
