  • 104 Irish Frieze

A heavy felted fabric made in Ireland from very ancient time. It is absolutely impervious to rain and has remarkable durability, and has been used for making the Cotha More (overcoat) for centuries. Wool of the longest and strongest staple is used, which is first dyed, then spun and doubled. After weaving, the fabric is put through the " tucking " process - this is a prolonged washing in a carefully prepared solution, slowly heated up to boiling point and then as slowly cooled again. This felts the fabric to such an extent that it is impossible after cutting the cloth to separate one thread from another. Many imitations made with shoddy and waste yarns are on the market.

  • 106 Lime Boil

A bleaching process consisting of boiling the limed fabric. Also called bow-king. The cloth is run through a solution of calcium hydroxide (milk of lime) Ca (OH).; then passed into a kier. The object is to decompose the fatty, resinous, and waxy impurities in the cloth. These are not removed here, but remain attached to the fibre as soluble lime soaps and are easily removed in subsequent processes.

  • 107 Madder Bleach

The most thorough bleach that cotton cloth receives. The process takes about four days and consists of several long boilings with alkalies and a final treatment with bleaching powder. It gives a full white and is generally used for goods to be printed. The usual procedure is as follows: - (1) Singeing to burn off all loose fibre. (2) Grey soaking, a simple steeping in water. (3) Lime boil, boiling in lime water for about ten hours under pressure, then washed in water. (4) Lime sour, a washing in cold acid solution of about 1 per cent strength. (5) and (6) Lye boilings in dilute solutions of caustic soda with resin soap for about ten hours. The sixth operation omits resin soap. (7) Chemicking, treatment in cold dilute solutions of bleaching powder, afterwards washing in water. (8) White sour, treatment in cold dilute acid solution as in No. 4. (9) Thorough washing in water and then drying.

  • 108 Steeping

    STEEPING, or DESUINTING WOOL
See Degreasing. ———————— A preliminary process in the bleaching of cotton cloth before boiling with lime or caustic soda. The action of the lye is thus assisted. Steeping also assists in the removal of sizing materials.

CPI).
