21 beneath
BELOW, UNDER, BENEATHBelow означает 'ниже' (какого-то определенного уровня): below sea level, below zero. Under предполагает, что предмет или лицо находятся под прикрытием: to tie under a tree, to walk under an umbrella. В буквальном значении below и under никогда не взаимозаменяются. Например, в предложении he dozed under his broad-brimmed hat замена under предлогом below невозможна и неизбежно произвела бы комический эффект. В переносном употреблении (о служебных отношениях между людьми) under означает 'в непосредственном подчинении, под непосредственным начальством', below имеет значение 'ниже чем' (по положению): a captain is below a general, a captain is under a major. Английское she works under him соответствует русским 'она работает под его непосредственным начальством' или 'он ее непосредственный начальник'. Beneath является книжным эквивалентом слов under и (редко) below: beneath a tree. Кроме того, beneath и below употребляются в метафорическом значении: beneath (below) criticism 'ниже всякой критики', to be beneath notice 'не заслуживать внимания'. В этом случае under употреблено быть не может.Difficulties of the English language (lexical reference) English-Russian dictionary > beneath
