Порода, состоящая из гидрооксидов и оксигидрооксидов Аl и в ср., близкая по составу к Аl2О3 • Н2О, включающ. гиббсит (гидраргиллит) Al(OH).,; бемит y-АlO(ОН) и диаспор НАlО2, примеси: SiO2, Р2О5, CaO, MgO, CO2. Б. обычно аморфен или мелкокристаллич. Образует массивные, землистые скопления. Цвет серый, желтый, красный. Блеск тусклый до землистого. В тонких шлифах прозрачен, у = 2,55+3,50 г/см3.
Б. - гл. вид минер, сырья для произ-ва алюминия, высокоглинозем. огнеупоров, цементов. Месторождения б.: Тихвинское (Россия), Бихор (Румыния), Далмация (Хорватия), Гайяна, Гана, Индия, Сейшельские о-ва, Австралия, Гвинея и о. Ямайка. Мировые ресурсы бокситов - 15,75 млрд. т.
