atavism, throwing back[лат. atavus — отдаленный предок]появление признаков отдаленных предков у потомков, родители которых эти признаки не имели. А. может быть временным явлением, обусловленным условиями жизни особи (вариационный А.), и мутационным А., обусловленным тем, что при скрещивании соединяются два наследственных задатка, каждый из которых в отдельности не проявляется, но при взаимодействии друг с другом возникает признак, встречавшийся ранее у предков.Толковый биотехнологический словарь.
