В современном английском языке наблюдается тенденция к употреблению единой формы местоимения who в любой позиции.1) Местоимение who выступает в функции существительного, местоимения what, which и whose употребляются как существительные и прилагательные, а местоимения when, where, why и how используются как наречия.а) Если местоимение who или what является подлежащим, то оно согласуется с глаголом в единственном числе:in this house? - The Smiths. — Кто живет в этом доме? - Семья Смитов.in the box? - Pencils. — Что было в коробке? - Карандаши.б) Если местоимение who или what задает вопрос к комплементу (Complement), то глагол имеет форму единственного или множественного числа в зависимости от числа подлежащего:his friends? - Mark and John. — Кто его друзья? - Марк и Джон.the talents and virtues by which he acquired this great reputation? — Каковы были таланты и добродетели, которые снискали ему такую славу?2) В качестве вопросительных местоимений-прилагательных употребляются which и what.
