Официальный язык – английский. Верующие – протестанты. Административно-территориальное деление: 6 общин и 2 района. Городское население 32% (1990). Столица – Сент-Джонс. Входит в Содружество. Глава государства – королева Великобритании, представленная генерал-губернатором. Законодательный орган – двухпалатный парламент. Поверхность холмистая, до 402 м высотой. Климат тропический, пассатный. В древности острова были населены индейцами. В 1493 открыты Колумбом; первоначально испанская, с 1632 британская колония. В 1834 отменено рабство.
