The reformist, rationalist movement of the 18th century philosophes and encyclopédistes found its most comprehensive expression in the Encyclopédie edited by Diderot and, for a time, d'Alembert, between 1751 and 1765. The works of the philosophes were largely directed against the values of the Ancien Régime. They favoured the view that the purpose of government was the happiness of the people and laid the foundations for the democratic, egalitarian ideas of the following century. -
