61 Clifton, Elmer
1890-1949Rex Lease, Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Bob Steele, entre otros heroes del western, forman parte de la nomina de actores a los que dirigio Elmer Clifton en algunas de las peliculas de sus series respectivas. Una obra abundante la de este director- guionista-actor, dominada por westerns y peliculas dramaticas, tanto mudas como sonoras. Cuando estaba dirigiendo No Wanted, 1949, cayo enfermo, siendo reemplazado por la actriz de la pelicula, Ida Lupino, quien desde entonces le tomo gusto a eso de dirigir peliculas. Quien fue Abraham Lincoln en El nacimiento de una nacion (The Bird of a Nation, D.W. Griffith, 1915) seria mas tarde director de filmes mudos con Roscoe “Fa tty” Arbu ckle, Dou glas Fairbanks y Va lentino para, posteriormente, dirigir cortos para Vitaphone en Nueva York entre 1931 y 1939, ano en que cerro el Estudio. Vuelve a Holly wood para dirigir The Leather Burners. El resto de su filmografia esta formada por filmes de caracter di dactico e industrial. 64 Horner, Harry
1910-1994Checo de nacimiento, estudiante de Arquitectura en Viena, fue ayudante del mitico Max Reinhardt. Llego a Hollywood en 1940, trabajando como director artistico y disenador de produccion, asociado a William Cameron Menzies. Como disenador de produccion consigue el Oscar en dos ocasiones, con La heredera (The Heiress, William Wyler, 1949), y El buscavidas (The Hustler, Robert Rossen, 1961). En los anos 50, Horner aborda esporadicamente la direccion de cine y de television. 1890-1952 (o Alvin J. Neitz)Realizador y guionista, Alan James, que popularizo su seudonimo, Alvin J. Neitz, repartio sus casi 80 realizaciones entre el cine mudo y el sonoro, a partes iguales. Curiosamente, y a pesar de que ambas funciones, la de director y la de guionista, las simultaneo, no es excesiva la cifra de las peliculas en que de sempeno ambos cometidos. Fue todo lo prolifico que las circunstancias –peliculas de una hora de duracion en productos baratos de consumo inmediato– aconsejaban. 1898-1964Polaco de nacimiento, Rudolph Mate es el director de fotografia de La pasion de Juana de Arco (La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1928), La bruja vampiro (Vampyr, Carl Th. Dreyer, 1930) o Liliom (Fritz Lang, 1934). Ya en Estados Unidos, continua con su labor fotografica hasta que, en 1947, se pasa a la direccion. La primera pelicula que firma en solitario es la magnifica Con las horas contadas (D.O.A., 1949), un subyugante ejercicio de estilo. Mas tarde alternara peliculas mejores y peores, pero el conjunto de su obra es altamente estimable, en particular algunos de sus westerns, como Marcado a fuego, Hombres violentos y La ley de los fuertes. 1902-1986Nacido en Boston, a Ray Nazarro se le asocia con dos criterios: Columbia Films, para la que hizo la mayor parte de sus peliculas, y rapidez, la que demostro entre 1945 y 1958, tiempo en que dirigio ochenta filmes, a un ritmo que en algunas temporadas supero el de uno al mes. A pesar de todo, sus westerns, que lo fueron la mayoria de sus peliculas, no resultaron nada desdenables por termino medio, mostrando una notable habilidad para desarrollar los argumentos que se le encomendaban, virtud que se agudiza en algunas de sus producciones de los anos 50.
