Слово, имеющее специальное профессиональное значение в определённой сфере искусства, ремесла, профессии. A term of art может употребляться не только в профессиональной речи, но и в разговорном языке. Например, слово a tonic (тонизирующее средство), обозначающее медицинский состав, который улучшает функции организма или поддерживает хорошее самочувствие, можно встретить в обычной речи. Однако tonic (тоника) также является a term of art — специальным термином в области музыки, обозначающим первую и основную ступень в диатонической гамме, главный тон, тонический центр музыкального сочинения, написанного в определённой тональности, и это слово не встретишь в разговорной речи. -
