Отрицательный ответ, разрешающий не совершать действие, передается модальным глаголом needn't или don't have: must I stay here? Мне обязательно здесь оставаться? No, you needn't, if you don't like to Можешь не оставаться, если не хочешь. В отрицательных предложениях must обозначает запрет: you mustn't smoke so much тебе нельзя так много курить. Must 3. в значении можно не... употребляется для выражения просьбы дать разрешение не делать чего-либо: must I drink the milk? можно мне не пить молоко? (3.) See have, mod. v; USAGE (3.). (4.) See may, mod. v; USAGE (1.), (2.).
