Il Medicare è l'assistenza sanitaria sovvenzionata dal governo federale che copre parzialmente le spese mediche per i cittadini oltre i 65 anni, per i dializzati e i disabili. Gli assistiti versano un contributo mensile e possono usufruire dei servizi ospedalieri e medici convenzionati. Esiste inoltre un tipo di assistenza privata parallela e supplementare al Medicare, il "Medigap". Chi non è coperto dal Medicare o dal Medicaid paga di tasca propria l'assistenza sanitaria attraverso assicurazioni sanitarie private. -
