•• В словарях, даже самых полных (например, в Новом БАРСе) это словосочетание отсутствует. Его происхождение – спортивное. В данном случае слово call выступает в значении решение судьи (это также отсутствует в словарях). Judgment call – субъективное решение, возможно, сомнительное, но не оспариваемое комментатором, поскольку «судья всегда прав». В последнее время из спортивного обихода эта фраза проникла в общий лексикон. Вот пример из журнала Time: Nobody knows by exactly what mechanism particles might cause disease. Given the state of the science, any analysis of pollution risks must be a judgment call. – Никто точно не знает, посредством каких механизмов частицы вещества могут вызывать болезни. При нынешнем уровне научных знаний любая оценка риска, связанного с загрязнением среды, будет неизбежно иметь субъективный характер.
