• football (American) футбол ( американский). Играют мячом овальной формы две команды по одиннадцать игроков в каждой на поле размером 330 футов (= 100 м) на 160 футов (= 50 м). Каждая команда стремится набрать очки путём пересечения игроком с мячом [*touchdown] линии ворот [end line], за что присуждается 6 очков. С мячом можно бежать, можно его бить ногами или передавать руками. Игрока с мячом атакуют противники, а члены его команды стараются их блокировать. Игра сопряжена с риском травм, поэтому футболисты выступают в защитных шлемах и одеты в форму, напоминающую доспехи. Игроки, получившие травмы, тут же заменяются запасными. Существуют 3 категории правил: студенческие [collegiate], профессиональные и школьные [high school]. Все они довольно сложные и ежегодно в них вносятся изменения.
